World Health Organization Sounds Alert Over Severe Lack of Obesity Injections

Under a tenth of patients eligible to benefit from obesity jabs including Wegovy are able to get them, warns the global health agency as it releases its first advice on the therapies.

With over a billion people worldwide currently living with obesity, it is urging broader and more equitable access to this class of drugs.

According to projections, in excess of 2,000,000,000 will be obese by 2030 if no action is taken.

"Our latest guidelines acknowledges that obesity is a lifelong illness that can be treated with holistic and continuous support," said WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

High costs, insufficient output, and distribution challenges are key hurdles to broad access to the treatments that can help people shift substantial body mass, says the organization.

Skinny Jab Shortage

Despite the current most optimistic scenario, the manufacturing of GLP-1 therapies would only suffice for around 100 million people – less than 10% of eligible patients, per the WHO.

The recommendation urges governments and firms to widen access, by measures including patent sharing.

The intellectual property rights on semaglutide – the core component of a leading brand – is scheduled to end in several countries in 2026.

The Way Weight-Loss Injections Function

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone to delay gastric emptying, curb appetite and enhance feelings of fullness so people consume fewer calories.

Individuals typically begin shedding pounds after several weeks of commencing the once-weekly jabs.

Studies suggests people may regain a significant portion after a year of stopping the medication, when their usual appetite return.

Being above a healthy weight elevates your chance for contracting medical conditions, such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, brain attack, and certain malignancies.

Excess weight affects people in countries worldwide and was linked to 3.7 million fatalities worldwide in 2024, according to the health agency.
