Time is optimal to change Manchester United's system - Ruben Amorim declares.

Man Utd captain Bruno Fernandes was one of seven first-team players absent from the holiday period victory against Newcastle United.

Manager Ruben Amorim argues that switching Man Utd's tactical system due to external scrutiny would have been "the finish" for him.

In a first against Newcastle United, Amorim abandoned his usual three-at-the-back formation with wide defenders and chose to deploy an orthodox four-man defense shielded by two holding midfielders.

Amorim acknowledged this at times became a back six in the latter phase as his squad clung on for a crucial result - securing only their second-ever clean sheet of the season.

While he once notably stated that not even the highest authority could compel him to change his system, Amorim maintains the capacity to experiment with varied formations has consistently been part of his strategy.

However, he stresses he could solely implement the change when his team were performing well enough - otherwise it would look as if he was bowing to outside noise.

"At the time I arrived here last season, I recognized maybe I didn't possess the squad to play well in that formation, but it was the start of a process," he commented.

"Our aim was to establish an style. Currently is a separate moment. We don't have a lot of personnel, and we must adjust, so they understand why we are making changes.

"This isn't because of the influence of journalists, or the faithful.

"Whenever the press criticize altering the formation constantly, I cannot change because the players will understand I'm changing because of you and I believe that is a disaster for the manager.

"When we are playing well in our preferred setup, then is the opportunity to adapt.

"We are going to grow into a stronger side because when our full complement of personnel are back, we are not planning to play with three defenders in every match."

Injury Issues Loom Large

With only two victories in eight games prior to beating Newcastle, it is arguable whether Amorim is accurate to state his team have been in good form.

He is, however, managing with a depleted roster, with multiple senior stars already ruled out for the forthcoming fixture against winless Wolves.

That number will rise if playmaker Mason Mount fails to recover the injury that forced his withdrawal from the Newcastle game at half-time.

Captain Bruno Fernandes is among those who will miss the Wolves match, despite the fact he is understood to be pressing his boss to allow him to make a comeback after his hamstring problem.

"Fernandes is already telling me he needs to train," said Amorim. "But there is no chance he is going to feature against Wolves. No way. That's definitive."

Fernandes' Role Is Unwavering

Nevertheless, the 31-year-old will probably continue to be deeply engaged, as while most injured players watch matches from the stands, Fernandes was seen monitoring the warm-ups from the entrance of the tunnel before the Newcastle game.

Amorim is sure his leader to carry on offering input.

"The guy is a natural leader," he stated. "He must not be the type of player that when he is not playing, he's not talking and speaking. He's constantly vocal. That is the reason he's the captain.

"There are bad things at times - his mannerisms he gesticulates - but he has a multitude of positive qualities. After he recovers, he heads to watch the rest of the squad practicing. There are a many things you don't see.

"I'm not sure if he desires my position or not, but he's a born leader. The guy is a leader."

Return Schedule for Injured Personnel

Although the precise timeline for the captain's comeback - and that of fellow unavailable players like Kobbie Mainoo, Matthijs de Ligt, and Harry Maguire - remains unclear, before the conclusion of January, the club will welcome back Noussair Mazraoui, Amad Diallo, and Bryan Mbeumo from international competition.
