The Film 'Together' Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

We present a test for long-term couples who are fans of scary movies: Settle in with your partner and stream Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its online premiere on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it might appear like standard body horror, but within Together lies a intense examination about how we choose to love each other.

An Introductory Film Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together is the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have been together for a decade. Married in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a particular energy to their characters, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The narrative begins when Millie and Tim transition from the big city to the rural area for her career. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, of course, but that’s primarily where the conventions conclude. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the two discover an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence takes hold of the pair. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying horror experience, interspersing moments of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes during something horrific). Shanks skillfully blends these components seamlessly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is suffering due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and far away from his support system. He is terrified of the notion of completely losing his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is amplified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie avoids making one partner or the other the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie confront the type of challenges that are inherent in long-term unions a decade in. At their core, they have affection for one another. They still laugh together, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of codependency and fully committing to a partner, the symbolism does not come across as hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama serve the other symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that single viewers have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could function as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the ending inspire anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your other half and state, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can experience today.

Together is available to watch on Hulu at present.
