Patients Coming Off Slimming Jabs Regain Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters
New research suggests that people who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals buying such drugs need to be cognizant of the danger of quick weight regain when the treatment is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a reversion to original mass within about one and a half years.
Analyzing Approaches
The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
The team point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the heightened weight return.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."
A Chronic Condition?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
People who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful return of cravings.
"I experienced something activating and you become starving," described a patient.
The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Widespread Interest
Recent estimates show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among women than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits relies on integrated lifestyle changes.
