Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year Amid Financial Instability
The United States central bank reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut this year amid economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve
The decision to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.
Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes
In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release reads. “Price increases has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.
Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions
The Fed typically analyzes BLS data to determine labor market conditions, including the count of employment gains created to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in August.
The figure of jobs created to the market in August was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.
Private Data Indicate Continued Decline
Though the bureau was scheduled to release September’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication when the closure started. Private payroll firm ADP reported earlier this month that the private sector cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated recently, a trend he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.
Price Data Shows Gradual Increase
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are rising, although slowly. Prices rose three percent over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
